A shopper should find out how much he or she should expect to pay for a certain model before they set out to find one for sale. They should also get a value for their trade-in if they have one.   This will insure that they are shopping in their price range and that they don't pay too much for their purchase.

Keep in mind these publications are just guides.  They cannot do things like judge the condition of the car you are considering for purchase or trade in.

Is your prospective purchase a known lemon?  Is it hiding something you and your dealer are not aware of?  Find out out at Carfax.com.  A Carfax report will tell you if a car has any title brands (rebuilt salvage, manufacturer buyback, flood damage, theft recovery, etc...), it detects odometer roll back, previous registration types, and a complete registration history since new. 

There is nothing wrong with buying a car that has a negative history, however there is something wrong with paying too much for one.  For the most part they are just as safe and dependable as a car with a clean title.  The difference is the price.  Because they are "branded" they sell considerably less than they would otherwise.
